Baptism is the outward response to an internal decision. A public statement of Jesus’ Lordship in our life. A powerful symbolic act. An honor and privilege.
A note regarding child baptism: At Joy Church we leave children’s baptism to the parents discernment and discretion.
However, we also believe that baptism is a decision to be made from a place of maturity. Something that will be remembered, agreed upon, and not need to be redone upon becoming an adult. That age will vary with children but in general we advise that families consider youth age (12+) With 6-11 being an acceptable age range although more rare and under 6 we would highly encourage parents to consider waiting. Again, ultimately we leave the final decision with the parents, as the shepherds of their homes and are happy to partner with families in this exciting opportunity.
Here are some important indicators we advise parents to consider for any child’s readiness –
- First, the child should have a clear understanding of the Gospel and personal relationship with Jesus.
- The child should also have a clear understanding of the reason and meaning of baptism as well as a personal desire for it.
